Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is the top attraction in the Gainesville area for naturalists, from serious birders to those interested in native plants and animals, to amateur and professional photographers, to those who simply want to see a lot of gators in their natural habitat.

Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is historically, geologically, and biologically unique, with 21 distinct biological communities providing a rich array of habitats. Animals include alligators, bison, wild horses descended from the horses left behind by the Spanish Conquistadors, and anywhere from 100 species of birds in summer to 270 species of birds in winter. Artist and naturalist William Bartram described the great appeal of Paynes Prairie when he wrote about his visit in 1774. Native Americans have been drawn to its riches for 10,000 years. The Visitor Center off US 441 is probably the best place to begin. Take in panoramic views of the prairie from the 50 foot observation tower or enjoy eight different trails providing opportunities for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. A campground with tent and RV sites and a boat ramp for access to beautiful Lake Wauberg is also available for visitors to enjoy.
