Throughout Alachua County you can experience the most beautiful scenic vistas you'll likely to ever see in the Sunshine State all while riding a bike. In fact, it might be the best way explore our area. At your own pace and free to go wherever you choose. A good place to start is a tour of the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail State Park. It stretches 16 miles from Gainesville's Boulware Springs Park through Paynes Prairie and the Lochloosa Wildlife Management Area. Heading east, the first few miles of the trail pass through historical and natural areas that provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. The last 5 miles of the trail wind through pine forests and wetlands to Hawthorne, a quaint little southern town with a few places to stop and grab a bite to eat. Other off-road paths do exist. A handful of them on the 21,000-acre Paynes Prairie Preserve and miles more for all skill levels at San Felasco Hammock. For intermediate to advanced riders, the Rock Trail in Gainesville offers several man-made obstacles, jumps, bridges and even a slalom course. All rides are free of charge, so just grab a bike, find a route and get going.
